Why it is in the kits

Each deploy script installs a backup cron on the server. Local Lab dumps every site's PostgreSQL database and archives its uploads when they have changed. Job Lab dumps all its databases and the media bucket. Launch Lab takes a consistent copy of each site's SQLite file with its uploads and secrets. All three keep seven daily, four weekly and six monthly copies, refuse to run when the disk is nearly full, and send a Telegram message if a backup fails.

Launch Lab's deploy also snapshots the database before every update and puts it back if the new version fails its health check. Restoring a Launch Lab site is one import-site command.

Worth knowing#

  • Copies stay on the same server. Copy them off, or point the backup folder at a mounted volume.

  • Launch Lab's nightly backup covers SQLite sites. On PostgreSQL, dump the database yourself.

  • Job Lab skips Redis and Meilisearch on purpose; both are rebuilt from PostgreSQL.
